There is no upper limit to how much you can spend on Computers. However in reality, Indian middle class families don’t have such high budget and unfortunately when ever you try to search for a computer / pc / laptop for light video editing works, you may end up with many choices and different budget computers.
How to choose and buy a decent but cheapest possible computer for youtube / facebook type social media video editing and light work load of college student code compiling and study?
It is easy to select a really lower end computer to save money but with such computers, performance isn’t satisfactory and even after spending the money to buy that thing, you stay disappointed and wanting to replace within days of purchase.
So here are few basic tips and what to buy in early 2022,
- When it comes to video editing workloads, stay away from Laptops. Budget laptops aren’t powerful enough to handle video editing and video rendering. You have to buy or spend serious money for desktop level performance. For example, try and search for a Rs. 40,000/- laptop, see what you are getting and try the below mentioned configuration for comparison
- Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 or lower computers are good for regular day to day computing. Surely then can edit those occasional videos using basic video editing apps but for using Adobe Premiere Pro / After Effects / Da Vinci Resolve type serious video editing software, your computer should come with atleast Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 or higher.
AMD vs Intel -> What to choose?
If you are watching & reading reviews for computers on the internet, you may see every benchmark is showing AMD outperforming Intel. But those are just numbers, in real world, the performance different between similar generation AMD Ryzen 5 and Intel Core i5 aren’t that big. So here, look for the cheaper option. The slight performance difference gives us, the consumers, an advantage of getting lower prices from Intel. At present, in early 2022, Intel Core i5 10th or 11th generation processors are significantly cheaper than their AMD Ryzen 5 counterparts.

Here is a video, where we are building our video editing desktop computer,
Buy HP / Lenovo / Dell or buy an assembled computer?
Here in India, we personally believe on buying assembled PC over branded computers. Not because branded computers are bad but they are costly when you compare them with same exact parts configuration but you need to put that PC together, which is called assembling, manually.
No, if you don’t know how to do it, then you don’t need to assemble that computer yourself since every computer store in India will have a technician doing it for free or for a small fee of Rs. 500 / 800 in case you buy the parts online and take it to them for assembling the PC.
Buy online or buy from local computer hardware selling stores?
It depends on where you live. For example, in larger metro cities of India, offline local stores will offer you 10-15% cheaper price compared to online purchase.
What configuration should you buy?

The beauty of assembled computer is that, it allows you easy upgrade. So always look to upgrade your existing computer. It can save you a lot of money without compromising on performance.
For example, many Indian families may have an old computer. It may be your own old computer or you have inherited it from your older brother, or may be it is passed down to you from your father or another family member. Try to take advantage of that. Reuse that old PC and just upgrade the core components to save a lot of money. Usually an old Computer needs 3 simple changes – Processor, Motherboard and RAM. You can reuse rest of the PC hardware. Check out our video, we have demonstrated that in our video posted above.
