Prepare to pay more for Netflix for Password Sharing

It is common for users to share their Netflix account between family members and multiple TVs or TABs they use in their household. In-fact in India, friends and family living in different household may split the monthly fee for a single account and share the account between themself.

NetFlix was till date very open about this concept and in-fact their official pricing page list plans allowing simultaneous viewing in multiple screen or devices with their top tier Rs. 649/- per month plan.

However, this sharing concept is soon to end since starting today, they are rolling out a restriction on this account / password sharing by slapping a fee for every extra user added to the primary account. In a press release, Chengyi Long, Director, Product Innovation confirms the same. This new model is starting with few countries and global rollout may happen in a phased manner.

Netflix plans and pricings are region based. So it’s not yet clear that how much this extra account adding fee will be in India but one can expect it to be anywhere between Rs. 100/- to Rs. 150/- per extra account, on top of the Rs. 649/- monthly fee.

Netflix is one of the costliest OTT app in India with it’s steep monthly fee of Rs. 649/- per month compared to what Amazon or other regional OTT charges. Netflix also loses out in India specific bundle offers what Indian Internet service providers offer. No surprise that Netflix has seen very little growth in India after their initial launch success and company has already expressed their disappointment on this.
